One common misconception of the multiverse theory is that parallel universes and string theory are the same. This is partly because of movies and other entertainment which consider them to be the same. They are not the same because of their different scientific definitions. The existence of parallel universes are only because of the multiverse theory. The theory of eternal chaotic inflation generates the parallel universes which make up the multiverse. The parallel universes are one theory of how the multiverse is structured. They show that space time is flat and continuous, which means that all of the universes are in some way connected. This is also why they are called “parallel” universes because they are literally parallel of each other on the plain of space time. In comparison, the way the multiverse was shown in my previous blog was that all of the universes are bubbles that are side by side in space time, but they are not connected in any way. These are simply two different theories that depict the multiverse in two different ways. They do not disprove the multiverse any more than they support it. However, string theory is completely different. String theory states that sub atomic particles, such as protons, neutrons, and electrons, do not exist, and are replaced by small strings. It says that the strings are so small that they cannot be viewed with the most powerful instruments, and that they vibrate to establish a particle’s size and mass. “At the same time, as Einstein's famous equation E=mc2 tells us, there is a relationship between energy and mass” (Redd 1), which means that an object’s vibration also has a relationship to its mass. String theory relates to the multiverse because it attempts to limit the number of dimensions that can exist in the universe. If string particles can limit the dimensions of this universe and they are different from those in another universe, then the multiverse theory could be physically proven. While string theory and the idea of parallel universes are different, they are also similar due to their connection to the multiverse theory. “In string theory, the multiverse is a theory in which our universe is not the only one; many universes exist” (Jones 1), and technically one theory of those universes is the idea of parallel universes.
